A continuous passive motion (CPM) machine may be used to move your joint after an injury or joint replacement surgery. It is most commonly used after knee replacement surgery, but it may also be used to help with ankle, elbow, or shoulder joints.
A CPM machine is used to:
For the knee, your leg will be strapped to a narrow platform, with your foot resting against the foot plate. The amount of bending and stretching, called flexion and extension, is prescribed by your healthcare provider. The CPM machine will move your joint gently and slowly. Usually you will use the CPM machine for 12 to 14 hours per day, with breaks every 2 hours for 3 weeks after surgery.
For other joints, you will also strap in and exercise for the amount of time advised by your healthcare provider.
You will likely start using a CPM machine after knee replacement surgery, while you are in the hospital. Some people are placed in a CPM right after surgery.
If you go into a rehab center after leaving the hospital, you will use their CPM machine. Your healthcare provider may prescribe a rental CPM machine that you can use at home. This is often covered by health insurance.
