What is mathematics disability?

Mathematics disability is a learning disability. People with this problem have math skills much lower than average.

What is the cause?

The cause of this disability is not always known. Like other learning disabilities, it tends to run families. It affects men and women equally.

Mathematics disability may also be caused by damage to certain parts of the brain, such as from a car accident or a stroke.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms may include problems with:

  • Doing simple math, such as mixing up addition and subtraction
  • Counting and remembering numbers
  • Telling time and understanding time limits
  • Having a poor sense of direction (north, south, east, west)

People with this problem may be good at reading and writing, and just have trouble with math.

How is it diagnosed?

The disability is often detected in children early in grade school by parents or teachers.

Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and medical history and examine you. You may have tests to check your vision or look for other medical problems. Your provider may refer you to a specialist for testing and treatment.

How is it treated?

Mathematics disability may be treated with one-on-one practice in math skills. If caused by a stroke or car accident that damaged the brain, physical or occupational therapy may help.

Adults with an untreated math disorder may have fewer career choices. Talking with a counselor may be helpful.
