What is tai chi?

Tai chi is a series of stretching and breathing exercises. Tai chi involves a series of circular movements done slowly and with mental focus. It is thought that life force, called chi, moves along certain energy pathways in the body. Tai chi is a way to balance the life force and improve physical and mental health. This type of energy balancing through movement is also known as Qigong or Chi Gung. Tai chi is sometimes called moving meditation. Tai chi may be used to:

  • Exercise in a gentle, low impact way
  • Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls
  • Lessen pain
  • Improve muscle strength
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve quality of life in people with cancer and heart disease
  • Improve breathing and lung function in people with COPD

How is it done?

You can learn tai chi from an instructional video, but it is best to start with an instructor to make sure that you do it correctly. Many places offer tai chi classes, such as tai chi centers, health clubs, YMCAs, recreation centers, and community colleges.

Be sure to tell your instructor about any health problems you have before you start tai chi.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing so you can move easily. You may want to practice tai chi barefoot.

As you move into the postures, you should move gently, without jerking or bouncing. Breathing the correct way is very important. You will breathe out for some positions and then breathe in as you move to other positions. You should be comfortable throughout the session. After doing tai chi, your body and mind should feel more relaxed.

If you are pregnant, talk with your healthcare provider before you start tai chi. Tai chi instructors may suggest that you do not practice tai chi:

  • Right after you eat
  • When you are very tired
  • When you have an active infection

After learning how to do the basic postures, you can do tai chi at home. Tai chi requires very little equipment. Regular practice each day is recommended.

Is tai chi safe?

Before starting any exercise or tai chi program, talk with your healthcare provider to make sure it is right for you. Look for a tai chi instructor who has experience with different health conditions.
